On the night of the 10th of October 2024, we had an Aurora outburst. The Sun had ejected a highly energetic stream of particles towards Earth just two days prior, and when they arrived and collided with Earths magnetic field, there was enough energy to produce Aurora so it could be seen all over Ireland. We are at Solar Maximum right now, when the Sun is most active, and this was the second outburst seen in Ireland this year.
The colours come from the interactions of the Suns particles with Nitrogen and Oxygen atoms in our atmosphere. I was giving a talk to a camera club on this night, so I was late getting out to shoot. Luckily just after midnight, the Aurora peaked again, and shone overhead, from East to West, and right behind the Castle.
For this photo I stayed at a distance so that I could capture the vast display, which almost dwarfed the Castle. This is a single 4s shot.
Note: All our prints are printed on Baryta 325g Paper, which is an excellent paper for framing. The paper is a gloss type, which gives very vivid colour views.
